About Me

I’ve spent over 34 years immersed in the world of Greek and Latin, first as a student and eventually as a teacher and researcher. My journey in the Classics has taken me from the lecture halls of the University of Iowa, where I earned my Ph.D. , to various colleges and five different seminaries where I’ve had the privilege of teaching. Currently, I serve as Professor of Classics, Emeritus at Calvin University in Grand Rapids. My work often centers on bridging the gap between ancient texts and modern readers, whether I’m acting as a Scholar in Residence at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary or working as a fellow for the Meeter Center for Calvin Studies. My expertise isn't just academic; it's deeply rooted in ancient and medieval philosophy, classical history, and theology. I’ve dedicated much of my career to high-level translation, bringing the works of figures like Theodore Beza and John Calvin into English for the first time. I also have a passion for spoken Latin and regularly lead immersive conferences to help others experience the language as a living, breathing tool for communication. When I’m not translating 17th-century manuscripts or teaching, you can find me: Serving as the pastor for Reformation Orthodox Presbyterian Church. Managing LatinPerDiem and AdNavseam, digital projects designed to make Latin and Greek accessible to everyone. Training in strength athletics, where I focus on powerlifting the big three. I believe that these "dead" languages are actually full of life, and I love finding new ways to share their history and wisdom with the world.
